If you’ve been hunting for that rare “unicorn” plant—one that stays small, doesn’t mind a dry summer, brings the pollinators running, and looks stunning twelve months a year—let me introduce you to your next garden obsession. Meet ‘Gold Jewel’ Abelia. Botanically, it goes by Abelia × grandiflora ‘Gold Jewel’, though you might occasionally see it…
If you’ve been searching for that rare, unicorn plant that looks gorgeous from April through November, doesn’t care about a little drought, and completely ignores the local deer population, let me introduce you to Abelia × grandiflora ‘Sunshine Daydream’. Every gardener eventually runs into that spot in the yard. You know the one—where the afternoon sun cuts out early, leaving a tricky patch of soil that is too dark for sun-loving favorites but just bright enough to bake traditional shade plants. For years, if you wanted a variegated shrub to brighten up those awkward…
If you are designing a compact backyard, mapping out a foundation planting, or trying to tease big personality out of a tight garden border, you know the design dilemma. You want a shrub that works hard all twelve months of the year, looks high-end, stays naturally neat, and refuses to be eaten to the ground…
The gardening world loves a shiny new object. Every winter, the glossy catalogs arrive filled with “revolutionary” new hybrids promising bigger blooms, weird colors, and impossible resilience. They were the tough, sprawling, semi-evergreen backdrops you planted along a driveway or the back of a border when you needed something that wouldn’t die. They did their job well enough, but they had a bad habit…
If your garden looks like a tired, washed-out version of itself by the time August rolls around, you are not alone. It’s that awkward late-summer stretch where the hydrangeas are turning crispy, the coneflowers look spent, and the whole landscape feels like it’s begging for a nap. Most shrubs give up the ghost after July,…
Walk outside on a crisp late-September morning with your first cup of coffee, and the garden can look downright depressing. Most of the landscape is visibly throwing in the towel. The perennials are turning into mushy brown skeletons, the annuals are spent, and the overall vibe is a slow slide into winter dormancy. But if…
